Juan Diego Vergara was born in
Lima, Peru in 1972 where he lives and works. He studied and specialised in painting at the Higher Autonomous National Fine Arts School of Peru (2002).
Juan Diego Vergara's collages set out to document a collective imagination of the French post-punk movement between 1985 and 1989 - quite a challenge for someone who has never been to France. He plans to do this through gathering first hand witness accounts and personal stories from different people of all ages.
Vergara assembles image archives using fanzines, magazines, record sleeves, clothing brands, club signs, and any possible examples of this counter-culture aesthetic. In collaboration with the public attending his exhibition, he photocopies, glues, paints and constructs this memorial to a movement which left its mark on many places throughout the world, including Lima.
This "Collage Archive" takes on the dimensions of a symbolic bridge between several cultures through an aesthetic which he holds dear. The idea is also to reconstruct a context which was not limited to the musical dimension (new-wave and underground rock) but which also included the social and political domains.
