Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac’s new exhibition brings together works by contemporary artists and looks at cultural references and works by other artists who have made an impact on their oeuvre. Some of the works being compared to those of the Western Contemporary artists are significantly important (for example woodcuts by
Kitagawa Utamaro and
Katsushika Hokusai).
A variety of European and non-European cultures are important inspiration for
Not Vital who lives between Switzerland, New York, Italy, and West Africa; the culture of these places heavily influencing his work. There is also work by
Jonathan Meese, a German painter, sculptor, performance artist and installation artist based in Berlin and Hamburg, English artist,
Marc Quinn, best known for "Alison Lapper Pregnant", a statue of
Alison Lapper installed on the fourth plinth at Trafalgar Square, "self", a sculpture of his head made with his own frozen blood, and "Garden" (2000). Quinn is one of the Young British Artists (YBAs) who presents here, "Sphinx", a sculpture of Kate Moss in a yoga position.
The aim of the exhibition is to document the implicit or explicit dialogue of non-European cultures with the creative work of outstanding contemporary artists, highlighting new facets to the artists’ works and revealing important external influences.
