Maison Européenne de la Photographie, 75004 [map]

As part of the centenary celebrations of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s birth, this exhibition offers an opportunity to view over 320 works kept at the MEP. The two large collections are the result of extensive work retrieved from the photographic archives for two exhibitions which took place in Paris: “Paris a vue d’oeil” at the Carnavalet museum in 1984 and “Des Europeens” at the MEP in 1997. Incorporating the famous “decisive moment”, these images highlight a blend of emotion and sharp perspective.

The exhibition by François Fontaine presents two series consecrated to statuary: "The christs of Salvador de Bahia, Brazil » (2004) and « Rêves de statues, Paris” (2006-2007). In the first series, amidst the churches and sacred art museums of Salvador de Bahia, the figure of Christ is ever present. A tragic beauty emerges from these suffering bodies. The second series evokes a nocturnal and mysterious Paris, where statues become strange characters. Transformed by the lights and shadows; diabolic fauns, fantastical animals and human bodies merge to become the new occupants of the city, giving the city a fascinating magical and supernatural dimension.
