« Sometimes cinema contains too much information; in my latest films I enter so far into abstraction that I no longer allow images in, I produce them solely through text and sound ».
Rosa Barba, the Italian artist, based in Berlin, is best known for her 16 mm films and installations. She has an interest in unusual sites or unlikely situations. In her own words, her filmic vision is "attracted by monumental leftovers, with a weakness for margins, interstices and interludes, and for remote architectural objects which have lost sight of - although not completely lost - the human." Barba creates links between image and physical space through her installation videos, often bringing the projector into the foreground, making it a sculptural element in itself. Starting from a basis of historical, social and cultural facts, her films explore the intersection between real and fiction.
Outwardly from earth´s center
Metre by metre the Swedish island of Gotska Sandön is drifting away from the Swedish mainland. The film depicts the inhabitants’ laborious endeavours to halt this displacement of their island.
They shine
They shine shows a line of solar panels installed in the Mojave desert in California, a place used by the American military industry.
Waiting grounds
"Waiting Grounds" is a 16mm film which records the quasi abstract physical spaces of ex-military testing sites in the Mojave desert in California with commentary.
It´s gonna happen
A film made of suspended words on a black background. The soundtrack reproduces a conversation of which the viewer is free to imagine the plot.
Panzano
For panzano, Rosa Barba filmed a family living isolated in the mountains. This work approaches madness in a subtle manner.
