Pushparaj Koshti

The surbahar, a surprising and rarely seen version of the sitar, was invented in the early nineteenth century. This particular lute was specially designed for the development of the raga in the dhrupad style and it was played at the Nawabs’ court and in private concerts. It has nowadays become a rarity; some sitarists do play it for their own pleasure, but very few, apart from Imrat Khan or Ashok Pathak, perform with it on stage.
Pushparaj Koshti studied the dhrupad with rudra veena master Moihuddin Dagar. He is one of those musicians for the “happy few”, being particularly fond of the surbaha, an instrument befitting meditation with its capacity to produce exceptionally low-pitched sounds. Its sonorities pervade the whole space and propel us into the very heart of raga and the cosmos…
