"I have the great privilege of being both witness and storyteller.
Intimacy, trust and intuition guide my work."
Jim Goldberg (born 1953) is a renowned American photographer / artist and writer who has been involved in long-term collaborations with those on the outskirts of society. Jim Goldberg has been a member of
Magnum Photos since 2006. The New Europeans is a project he started 4 years ago for a project based on the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. The project recounts the travels of refugees and immigrant populations, who have fled countries ravaged by war or economic difficulties, to settle in Europe. For the last few years Jim Goldberg has photographed immigrants, refugees, and victims of human traffic in Greece and in the Ukraine. With the HCB award he will be continuing this journey by exploring his own origins and migration routes; from Iraq to the Congo, from Russia to the Philippines, from Sudan to Moldavia. The current project focuses on the socio economic landscape of Greece and on the drama of immigrants who find refuge there, whilst also exploring greater subjects and raising the question of racism and of cultural persecution in the world. The jury recognised the originality, sincerity and creativity of Jim Goldberg’s work, a photographer well known in America but less so in Europe. This is an occasion to see more of his work.
