Wim Wenders' 1999 film documenting the musical life of Havana in the 1940s gets a deserved revisit. The examination of political tensions netween Cuba and the USA from this musical standpoint is quite poignant in the current climate, the Cuban musicians reactions to visiting the States, many of them for the first time, still form a revealing point well made.
Not to mention the musical impact - worldwide audiences are now aware of
Ibrahim Ferrer,
Rubén González,
Compay Segundo and
Elíades Ochoa, rather than solely Cuban listeners and afficionados.
