This retrospective organized by the
Victoria and Albert Museum presents a fascinating look at the extraordinary career of the creative chameleon
Lee Miller, who has been a model, muse of surrealists such as
Man Ray (who also became her mentor and lover) and
Pablo Picasso before finally becoming portraitist and fashion photographer herself. Her most enduring body of work is that of her Surrealist images.
Her career is remarkable. In 1944 she became a correspondent accredited to the US Army and, alongside David Sherman, documented the daily life of G.I's as well as documenting events such as the liberation of Paris. She also captured powerful, often difficult photos from concentration camps. After the war she continued to work for Vogue for a further 2 years, covering fashion and celebrities.
The exhibition includes around 150 works from various collections, brought together for the first time, and is supported by a short film by Jean Cocteau,
Le Sang d'un poète (1931), in which Lee miller played one of the main roles.
