Shinji Aoyama, director, film and documentary maker, composer, critic, and writer (to name but a few of his talents) is considered to be one of the key figures of New Wave Japanese cinema. Starting out as an assistant to filmmaker
Kurosawa, Aoyama, counting such influences as Balzac and Faulkner in his work, went on to win critical acclaim and the critic’s award for his film Eureka at the
Cannes Film Festival in 2000. In collaboration with the
Festival d'Automne à Paris a retrospective of his work is being shown until 21st December.
"Koorogi" (or "Crickets") is an enigmatic, cerebral drama filmed in a claustrophobic, restrictive aspect ratio. A young woman assigned to care for a deaf and mute man (Tsutomu Yamazaki) has sacrificed her own wider existence for the employment, and so begins to "test" Yamazaki's reliance on her by slowly increasing the distance and decreasing her presence in the care environment.
The showing is followed at 19:00 by a conference on the theme of "Cinema is, of course, a process of demolition, but..." featuring extracts from Shinji Aoyama's archives.
