Le Festival des Cinémas Différents has become one of the most important festivals dedicated to experimental film, bringing together professionals and film lovers of Avant Garde film.

This year will present a mix of shorts and films. Saturday 13th December at 4pm offers all those interested to come and discuss and share stories about the last ten years of the festival.

For the opening night the festival looks at black and white film and films from the past 10 year and includes a video performance from Marie Sochor: Le repas (France, 2008). Taking the metaphor of digesting a good book and reading as food for the soul, the artist sits down to eat the work “Le repas” by Valère Novarina. The title of the book, as well as the video performance becomes the actual subject of the filmed action. With minimal production the elements are reduced to a white tablecloth, a plate, a fork, a knife and a glass of wine. The literary dish of which the artist cuts up is eaten and swallowed.

The piece has parallels with Herzog Werner’s film “Werner Herzog eats his own shoe” (see Herzog retrospective, Thursday) although if I had a gun to my head and had to choose, I’d probably opt for the book!
