New manchester four piece
Delphic pay a visit, fresh from supporting
Phoenix on their current tour. We caught up with them after their London show on Monday...
TP: Manchester has a great history of dance / indie crossover bands... how much of this has influenced your music?
DE: Growing up in Manchester is obviously going to have some sort of influence on the music that you make due to the strong acts that have graced the city. but we are as much influenced by Manchester as we are by music from London, or from France, or from Chicago, or from Iceland. Manchester embraced the dance era, but didn't necessarily instigate it. and whilst we are inherently going to reference some of the Manchester acts we grew up with, we aim to combine these influences with ideas from other places in order to create something new and exciting.
TP: How does the way you write your music differ from other indie/dance acts?
DE: We wouldn't really like to speculate on how other bands write their songs. we have our own particular way of putting a song together and are not sure whether this is unique to ourselves or not. the three of us delegate tasks very equally - it is a very communist way of working. we come up with ideas - either a melody or a sound or a beat then work together to build up the idea. we gradually build up the ideas in twos on laptops and synthesizers, before taking it to our rehearsal room and figuring out how we can add live instruments to our electronic sounds to make it more unique.
TP: You're a live band but your set is very reminiscent of a DJ set, what was the thinking behind this?
DE: We have watched a lot of djs like ewan pearson and paul woolford, as well as live acts such as Justice and Daft Punk, who mix their sets together, but haven't seen many bands do the same thing. we thought it would be fun.
TP: Delphic is just over a year old, you've already signed a record deal, toured europe with Bloc Party, played with Little Boots and Friendly Fires... what has been the highlight so far?
DE: We toured around europe with bloc party earlier in the year, which was an obvious highlight. we got to see a lot of places we have never seen before - Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo etc... our live set improved considerably on that tour as we were playing every night for a month, and previous to that, we had only done 5 or 10 gigs... we are in the process of putting down the finishing touches to our debut album, so finishing that will singularly be the most significant thing that has happened to the band so far.
TP: You supported French band Phoenix this week on their UK album launch, how was that?
DE: We are all very big fans of Phoenix so we were very grateful to play with them for their album launch show. it was a lot of fun.
TP: What's next for Delphic?
DE: We play festivals this summer around the uk and europe. and our album will be released later in the year. the follow up single to counterpoint, this momentary, is coming out on Kitsune in july.
TP: What's your favourite drink?
DE: Carrot and apple juice
TP: Do you have any pets?
DE: We have a lizard called Delphine.
