The
Ensemble Intercontemporain perform
Berio's single-act work "Passaggio". Divided into six "stations", the work, which is subtitled "messa in scena", was premiered at the
Piccola Scala in Milan in 1963. It is a provocative expression of its solitary female character's subjection to social pressures. The choir is placed in the audience, and plays the part of "the world" - laughing, jeering and taunting the protagonist throughout what is one of Berio's most violent pieces.
