Joaquin Rodrigo's 1939 work Concierto de Aranjuez (named after the
town) for guitar and orchestra has affected and influenced generations of jazz musicians including
Dave Liebman (centre component of this performance),
Chick Corea,
Herb Alpert and
Miles Davis, who was famously haunted by the concerto's rich textures and strong themes.
New Yorker Liebman peformed with Davis' group between '72 and '74, contributing to the seminal Big Fun and Dark Magus, amongst other recordings. A master of Coltrane-esque modern style, he has worked with
Steve Swallow,
Dave Holland and
Elvin Jones, amongst others.
