The American minimalist artist
Joel Shapiro presents a rare collection of designs inspired by his famous abstract sculptures. Between constructivist tradition and reference to the human body, Joel Shapiro uses extremely simplified forms and dresses them in bright simple colour. He plays with the idea of movement and seeks to provoke a type of “empathy”. For him, geometric shapes hold emotion. Created in an intuitive way they are constructed spontaneously. Even if an obvious link lies between the sculptures and designs, Shapiro’s designs are a two dimensional approach to a subject he explores through sculpture: a form in space. As he explains, “the designs are the questions and the notes. I design problems at any given moment. Once the problem is resolved it becomes a synthesis of my work”.
Born in 1941 in New York, Joel Shapiro became well known after his exhibition « Anti-Illusion : Procedure/Material » at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1969. Around that time he began to work with the Paula Cooper gallery in New York. Since the middle of the 70s, Shapiro has been present in numerous international exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York ; Whitney Museum of American Art in New York ; Tate Britain ; Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice ; Tel Aviv Museum of Art ; and Klasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.
