At almost 70, one of the most controversial Japanese photographers
Nobuyoshi Araki presents a recent series of her famous photographs of young women tied in the tradition of Shibari, the erotic bondage art.
Nobuyoshi Araki started photography in the 60s. Freed from all taboos the work of the artist focuses on the themes of sex and death in Tokyo. At a time where the notion of femininity and of sexuality was undergoing radical changes in Japanese society, Araki was showing young women in totally submissive positions. Beyond the complexity of bondage art, these photos are witness to the conventions of society, the complexity of the erotic Japanese tradition of Shibari and a biographical reference to Nobuyoshi Araki's first model, his wife Yoko who died young.
Nobuyoshi Araki’s photograhy has been exhibited worldwide including exhibitions at LACMA in Los Angeles, Centre Georges Pompidou, le Fotomuseum in Winterthur and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
