San Fran band
Deerhoof often get shooed into the indie rock stable with label mates
The Thermals,
Elliot Smith,
Marnie Stern et al. The truth is slightly different: when closely examined, the band's style of composition and performance holds more in common with modern classical music. Sure, there's guitars, drums, bass, vocals. Yes, there are songs. But under the hood there is dissonance, flighty rhythmic irregularities, juxtaposition of raw emotive playing and flat vocal performance and incredible levels of harmonic detail. Live, the (often heavily improvised) music moves forward in a measured but almost classically rubatic way.
Portand experimental pop band
Parenthetical Girls' previous album "Safe As Houses" (released on
Slender Means Society in 2006) is a Mercury Rev-esque collection of finely detailed songs, with each instrumental part blending in highly unconventional ways to create a sort of Frankenstein's monster of a pop album, all the bits in the right place but something distictly odd about the stitching. Having extensively toured that album, the band bring you their new collection "Entanglements".
And if that's all too round the houses for your tastes, metalheads
Dimension X will be sure to get straight to the point with their honed prog/concept epics.
