Don Johnston (Bill Murray) is a hardened bachelor. His last conquest has just left him. Whilst he resigns himself to living alone again he receives an anonymous letter in which one of his former girlfriends tells him that he is the father of a 19 year old son who has left home to look for him. Don begins a long cross country trek of which he discovers four of his former lovers. Through these surprise visits he finds himself confronted with his past and also his present.
