Our humble town is graced by the presence of a true legend - poet, author, musician and political voice
Gil Scott-Heron. with a recording career spanning four decades and a collaboration list which includes (amongst many, many others)
Brian Jackson,
Malcolm Cecil and
Blackalicious, Scott-Heron is widely acknowledged as one of the primary movers to engender the creation of hip hop, modern R&B and neo soul. Tracks like "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and "We Almost Lost Detroit" display the musical and political conciousness which would go on to form the foundations of modern rap.
After an initial two year jail span for Cocaine posession and a further three for leaving the rehab centre upon release, Gil Scott-Heron is now back on tour, has a new album in the works and has resumed work on his long-time literary project "The Last Holiday". And the world is surely a better place for it.
