Melquiades Estrada, a Mexican countryman, is found dead in the desert. The local authorities rapidly bury him at the public cemetery without investigating the reasons for the crime. Pete Pekins, his best friend, decides to lead the enquiry himself and find the assassin. In order to keep his promise to Melquiades that he would bury him in his home town of Jiménez in Mexico, Pete undertakes a journey horseback into Mexico, offering his friend a final journey, that of his third funeral.
