The currrent lineup of Franglish drone loungers
Stereolab tour their recent Chemical Chords album. Arguably the first band to fit the term "post rock", the heavily political, Surrealist/Situationist influenced six piece mash krautrock, lounge, 60s pop, experimental and drone elements to form a hypnotic backing to Sadier's bilingual and mostly Marxist political vocals.
Released from their contract with Warner Bros in 2004 when
Elektra folded, Stereolab have operated both independantly and in conjuction with Too Pure for a number of years. The latest oevre, which emerged in August on
4AD, is the most whittled-down example of their work so far, and whilst not as idealogically strong or musically epic as their brightest moments of the past (see
Peng!, Dots and Loops, Sound-Dust) it is not one to miss.
Live, Stereolab are often compared to noisy boys and girls such as
My Bloody Valentine,
Velvet Underground,
Sonic Youth,
Explosions In The Sky... one thing's for sure - this band play loud, so don't forget your earplugs.
