Erwin Blumenfeld (1897–1969) was born into a Jewish family in Berlin. He lived in Holland and France where he was recognised for his avant-garde artistic work. In 1941, he left Europe for the United States where he became one of the most sought-after fashion photographers in the world in the 1940s and 1950s.
His commercial work in fashion saw him working for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, mostly in colour. The photographs in the exhibition have been taken in America but still remain heavily influenced by European photography from the 1920s and 1930s and the
Dada and
Surrealist movements.
