CONCERT

Jazz à la Villette: Seun Kuti

Written 30 January

Tuesday 01 September, 20:00
Grand Halle de La Villette, 75019 [map]
Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80, Amadou & Mariam, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou

The youngest of Fela's dynasty (now just 27) pays a very welcome visit leading his father's former band, Egypt 80. Having played alongside Fela in the band for eight years before his father's death, Seun Kuti is often regarded as the closest follower of Fela's musical path - though his desire to make something new, something uniquely his own, has often been expressed. Seun's stage shows with the Egypt 80 hold one thing firmly in common with Fela's, though: energy, commitment and pure crowd moving charisma.

Also on the bill tonight, one of the biggest acts to come out of Mali in recent musical history - Amadou & Mariam.
