The second event from Jazz à la Villette to feature on our pages features arguably one of the most important figures to affect the progress of jazz history:
Ornette Coleman. Widely acknowledged as one of the key innovators behind the free jazz movement, Coleman's sound is unmistakeable: the super-expressive, vocal wail of his instrument defined an era, and his 1959 album "
The Shape of Jazz to Come" changed the landscape of improvisatory music forever.
Coleman continues to move music forward today - his curatorial role in London's Meltdown Festival this year saw one of the most progressive lineups to grace the event yet, as he selected
Charlie Haden,
Yoko Ono and
Yo La Tengo, amongst others.
