"Pandora's Lovely Stuff"

After "Rubber Soul" in 2008 and her second show at the gallery, the Moscow-based artist Diana Machulina, winner of the Kandinsky Prize 2008, surprises again with “Pandora’s lovely stuff”.

In this enigmatic title, there is black humour and a hidden reality in the paintings.

In the exhibition, Diana Machulina re-enacts the universal myth of pandora’s box with a series of slightly absurd still-lives of basic objects.

However, they are not simple romantic everyday objects, but painted documents of the worldwide fight against terrorism. The painting entitled “A farewell to arms”, depicts those objects which are constantly being confiscated by airport security services, as components of potential bombs, when those who carried them out in their purses or cases have no idea themselves about their horrible explosive properties.

In other paintings, the juxtaposition of advertising posters and self-defence manuals presents an alternative reality to the “farewell to arms”: the beautiful objects advertised becoming surprising arms of self-defence.

Born in 1981, Diana Machulina lives and works in Moscow. She is one of the best examples of the young generation of Russian artists. She was awarded the Kandinsky Prize as best young artist in Moscow, in 2008 and has participated in numerous exhibitions in Russia and abroad.
