Mary Wigman : quand le feu danse entre les deux pôles
1982 - 42'
Mary Wigman and Allegra Fuller Snyder
Mary Wigman is a dancer, choreographer and emblematic figure of German expressionism. Her research made her a pioneer of modern dance in Europe at the start of the twentieth century. The film offers a portrait of the artist captured in full creative and working mode. We discover a person for who dance is a community affair, a transcendence and freedom from the body, a discipline and knowledge.

Actress, dancer, cabaret artist and also manager, the unclassifiable
Valeska Gert was a pioneering figure of modern dance. Worshipped by some, judged as scandalous by others, she was nevertheless one of the key personalities of the Berlin and European scene during the 20s and 30s. The arrival of Hitler however forced her to flee and put an end to her career. Despite the energy and inventiveness she continued to show and despite several roles in cinema she never again found her notoriety which had been hers during the Second World War. In 1968, preoccupied by a fear of being forgotten, Valeska Gert produced an account of her life under the title “Je suis une sorcière. Kaléidoscope d'une vie dansée”. We see her here several months before her death in this auto portrait, in dialogue with Volker Schlöndorff. An extraordinary film due to its archive footage and the intensity of the presence of Valeska.
