Ugo Rondinone

Ugo Rondinone, a New York-based mixed-media artist whose works explore themes of fantasy and desire, opens with a new exhibition over two levels of the gallery and consisting of new works : three large “doors”, eleven “Star Paintings“ and three black masks from his Moonrise.West series. The title of the latter being an extensive series of giant, ghost-like masks, sculpted and cast in a black gel-like chemical substance polyurethane, which merge animal and human features to generate an ambiguous malevolence. The artist has articulated this work to be poetic and spiritual in nature, as it provokes us to address a split between our inner selves and public personas; a mask covering our true feelings and intentions.

Running parallel to this, works by Ugo Rondinone will be presented from September 17th to November 15th at the occasion of Le Festival d’Automne in Paris for which Ugo Rondinone is the invited artist. The Jardin des Tuileries will host the complete Sunrise East series, twelve bronze silver masks, representing the cycle of twelve months and a new installation How does it feel ? will be shown at Le Cenquatre. Ugo Rondinone also created the Festival d’Automne poster on which one of his masks appears.
