Jointly organised by Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and the Japan Foundation, this exhibition presents a view of travel seen through the eyes of five Japanese photographers and filmmakers: subjective and diverse visions of the Japanese Archipelago and other countries, urban scenes and distant or imaginary lands are all expored. The exhibition is part of the Quai Branly Photoquai exhibition (see issue 46).
Naoki Ishikawa, adventurer and talented climber shows us mount Fuji as we’ve never seen it before, Toshiya Momose looks at strangely empty urban landscapes, the theme of insularity is at the heart of Takeshi Dodo’s work; fascinated by those places still isolated despite modernisation, Hiraki Sawa explores the imaginary world, Sayuri Naitô presents a fresh view of Lisbon, whilst Kôji Onaka errs into a Japan soon to disappear.
