For his new series, « Hands and/or Feet (Part One) »
John Baldessari pursues his exploration of human identity through the fragmentation of different body parts. In the majority of these works this dimension is again reinforced by a vertical and horizontal separation where various black and white photographs have been placed with coloured sections.
As in his previous series « Raised Eyebrows/ Furrowed Forehead »; « Noses & Ears, Etc, » and « Arms and Legs (Specif. Elbows and Knees), Etc », Baldessari explores the whole through what he chooses to exclude and to conserve through the means of photography, painting and sculpture.
Baldessari has been an innovative force in contemporary art by redefining how we see art and how we use material throughout his career. He currently has a retrospective at the Tate Modern in London until 10th January.
