Philippe Cognée

Daniel Templon presents the new exhibition from Philippe Cognée, « Passages ». Fascinated by the multiplicity of places of transit, the artist explores through several panoramic canvases, the daily and ordinary places of transition: large areas, airport footbridge, hotel corridors…

Philippe Cognée counts amongst the major painters of the French artistic scene. For nearly twenty years he has led the exploration of regard, image and memory, continuously questioning the condition of modern man.

For this new work around the theme of circulation and wandering, Cognée has taken as a starting point photographs on a mobile phone. Images capturing fleeting moments of travel in cities; these low resolution images give the places an abstract edge. Cognée reworks images, adding paint until they become almost unrecognisable. As Cognee says himself “ I want to push overexposure to the extreme in order to only retain the essential in an image”. The exhibition is in conjunction with the first monograph consecrated to Cognée’s work published by Editions Daniel Templon.
