Aloe Blacc, Stac

TP: What's your musical background?
Stac: I don't think I really have a musical background, it's more of a singing background. I tried to learn piano and music theory but the best I got was learning to play chords. Singing has always been the thing I love to do best. I went to the Brit School which taught me a lot about music, I learned a lot from the people I was at school with about things like genres of music I had never heard of. I thought everyone was into Soul because its the only kind of music that I knew about! I then went to Leeds College of Music where I learnt loads about the music industry. There is a huge Jazz and Funk scene up there so it was really interesting for me to see what being a musician actually meant and how the live scene worked. I met producers and sang on their tunes but I didnt really feel like I was very good at being me. When I moved back down to London I wasn't surrounded by musicians anymore so I had to find my own way of writing and recording. I asked my folks to buy me a soundcard and a decent microphone and began to write little acapella ditties like Balls Bounce and Tip!

TP: Did you grow up in a very musical environment?
Stac: Not particularly! We listened to the charts every week on a sunday but other than that it was just me trying to learn piano but getting bored and then deciding it would be more fun to write a song, record it into my karaoke machine and then use another tape to record that playing while I sang a harmony over the top. I'm an only child so I've always had to use my imagination.

TP: Has your home town been an important part of your development?
Stac: Good lord no! My home town is a sleepy if not a little bit chav inflicted village in Surrey, so I used to spend all of my time in Selhurst (which is where Brit School is) or down the Black Sheep Bar in Croydon, the only place where they played Funk, Soul and Hip Hop on a friday night.

TP: How has London influenced your music?
Stac: I think mainly through the people that I have met. London has presented many opportunities to me that have been amazing! I love London for that. I have recently been involved in a project called Musicity where I was commissioned to write a track about a building or space in London and the idea is that if you go to Blackfriars Bridge you can download the track that I wrote about it with your Smart Phone or if you go to Southbank Centre you can download Paul White's track! There are so many exciting projects like that going on in London. I love it.

TP: You combine a lot of different influences on the new album - what are the roots of your style?
Stac: Being brought up on Soul, discovering hip hop and folk and being an only child are the main reasons my album came out the way it did, I think. When it comes to writing my own songs not much thought goes into what I'm actually trying to achieve, I just let whatever it is that's stuck up there come out.

TP: Is this your first gig in Paris?
Stac: Yes! I am SO bloody excited. Can't believe it's actually going to happen in a few days time! Im going shopping with my Mum just to make sure I am extra stylish, especially supporting Aloe Blacc...have you seen his threads?? The gig is going to be so much fun and I feel incredibly lucky to have been asked.

TP: What's coming up, recording and gig-wise?
Stac: The rest of this year is gonna be about promoting Turn That Light Out. We are playing a very special couple of gigs. Accidental Power-cut on the 4th November at St Barnabas Church is going to be wonderful. Its a completely unplugged, no amplification whatsoever gig with my choir and a string section so hopefully thats going to be a great experience but also we are playing The Scala in Kings X on 27th November for WahWah 45s (my label's) 11th Birthday party alongside some amazing acts including Quantic and the Unabombers.
In terms of releases this year we are putting out the Turn That Light Out Remix Album on 15th November including reworks from Bonobo, Natural Self, Blue Daisy, TM Juke and Royce Wood Junior. Next year I'll start work on recording the second album. I've got a couple of tracks ready so it's all about getting them in the studio. Very excited about doing that again!

TP: What's you favourite drink?
Stac: Red wine.

TP: Do you have any pets?
Stac: I did have a dog called Abbey but she died. I cried a lot. She could open doors.
